mihee-nathalie lemoine has a life course where cultures and identities combine to give birth to the art of survival.
the meeting with this queer artist was striking. zer words followed each other at full speed in a desire to share with as many this extraordinary experience.

lemoine uses history and suffering arising as a driver of artistic creation in order to find happiness and balance.

Jeremie Battaglia working with cultural directorial factory since the launch of the project. Every Friday, he invites us to meet a designer who makes its mark in the Quebec art world.

0.09 - my name is korean adoption cho mihee
0.12 - and my name is nathalie lemoine belgian adoption
0.16 - I became an artist, not how I thought
0.20 - that my grandmother gave me brushes and canvases
0.23 - and said "i think you will be what to do!"
0.27 - it helped me to express myself in relation to my identity doubts.
0.36 - that's how i started from the age of 13-14 years
0.40 - and i finally continued with an attempt in the super 8 cinema
0.45 - it helped me to go to my country of origin: south korea.
0.50 - because koreans recognized me as korean ...
0.52 - ... finally, all of sudden.
0.54 - and they invité.e me. korea
0.56 - it allowed me to rebuild my identity a bit.
0.58 - by missing parts going in the country ... in busan city where i born.
1.04 - and finally to be critical to international adoption.

1.42 - i think I hit a lot the adoptee community ...
1.46 - because for them it's really significant to have been numbered.

2.08 - i think that I like a lot of artists, a work that can be therapeutic.2.12 - in 2008, i received the first letter from my adoptive father who wanted to dis-adopt me.
2.22 - i took 100 pictures of me as child and an adult picture that is really androgynous ...

2.38 - i do not really like to label myself as queer artist, but rather as activist artist
2.44 - is true that in montreal, i met many more people like me, that are androgynous.
2.48 - and the fact that i am intersex, for me, the binary nature of being male or female,
2.55 - it's not because i do not feel completely woman that i'm automatically a man.
3.00 - not by my genitals, but compared to my spiritual identity.
3.05 - i'll cook 'poutine-ramyeon.'
3.09 - these are non-spicy korean noodles. 'gomtang' is based on cow's tail, so a good soup.
3.20 - when i was waiting for the answer for my stay in montreal,
3.22 - in the meantime, my permanent residence,
3.24 - i thought i will have to maybe leave
3.26 - and what is the identity of a person if not by food.
3.30 - so, i started eating noodles every day.
3.34 - i cook a dish everyday.
3.36 - specifically korean instant noodles.
3.40 - and at the end i made an artwork.
3.42 - a kind of hanging with all emptied packages of noodles.

3.50 - i decided to come here in montreal,
3.52 - because it was a truly neutral ground to my adoption
3.56 - in korea not to be an adopted child. and in belgium  i am a foreigner.
4.02 - as if i really wanted to be foreign, as being in a country where I have nothing to do with.
4.06 - is the lot of many immigrants coming to montreal starting again at zero
4.12 - it's really a choice i do not regret at all.

mihee-nathalie lemoine a un parcours de vie où cultures et identités se mélangent pour donner naissance à un art de la survie.
la rencontre avec cette artiste queer fut marquante. Ses mots se succédaient à toute vitesse dans un désir de partager avec le plus grand nombre cette expérience hors du commun. Lemoine utilise son histoire et les souffrances qui en découlent comme moteur de création artistique afin d’y trouver bonheur et équilibre.
Jérémie Battaglia collabore avec La Fabrique culturelle à titre de réalisateur depuis le lancement du projet. Chaque vendredi, il nous invite à rencontrer un créateur qui imprime sa marque dans l’univers artistique québécois.

• 0.07 mon nom d’origine, c’est kimura byol
  0.09 mon nom d’adoption coréen c’est cho mihee
  0.12 et mon nom d’adoption belge est nathalie lemoine
  0.16 je suis devenu.e. artiste, pas vraiemnt comment je le pensais
  0.20 c’est à dire que ma grand-mère m’a donné des pinceaux et des toiles
  0.23 et m’a dit “je pense que tu seras quoi en faire !”
  0.27 ça m’a aidé à m’exprimer par rapport à mes doutes identitaires.
  0.36 c’est comme ça que j’ai commencé à partir de l’âge de 13-14 ans
  0.40 et j’ai continue finalement avec une tentative dans le cinéma super 8
  0.45 ça m’a aide à aller vers mon pays d’origine : la corée du sud.
  0.50 parce que les coréens me reconnaissaient comme coréenne…
  0.52 … finalement, tout d’un coup.
  0.54 et, ils m’ont invité.e. en corée
  0.56 ça m’a permis de reconstruire un peu mon identité.
  0.58 par des pièces manquantes en allant dans le pays… à busan où je suis né.e.
  1.04 et finalement à être critique à l’adoption internationale.
  1.06 queer : Courant de pensée militant né dans les années 90 qui remet en cause les catégories d’identités de genre et d’orientation sexuelle.

  1.42 je pense que j’ai touché pas mal la communauté des adoptés…

  2.08 je pense que comme beaucoup d’artiste, un travail ça peut être thérapeutique.
  2.12 c’est vraiment en 2008, j’ai reçu une première lettre de mon père adoptif qui voulait me désadopter.
  2.22 j’ai repris 100 images enfants et de ma photo adulte vraiment androgyne …
  2.28 où on voyait pas vraiment mon genre.
  2.30 c’était aussi joué sur différentes identités que je commençais à explorer avec mon vécu à montréal

  2.38 moi, je ne me définissais pas vraiment comme artiste queer, plutôt artiste militante
  2.44 c’est vrai qu’à montréal, j’ai rencontré beaucoup plus de personnes comme moi, c’est à dire androgyne.
  2.48 et le fait que je sois intersexe, pour moi, la binarité d’être homme ou femme,
  2.55 c’est pas parce que je ne me sens pas femme complètement que je sois un homme automatiquement.
  3.00 non par mes parties génitales, mais par rapport à mon identité spirituelle.
  3.05 ça va être ‘poutine-ramyeon’.
  3.09 ce sont des nouilles non-piquantes coréennes. ‘gomtang’ c’est à base de queue de vache, donc un très bon bouillon.
  3.20 quand j’étais en attente de la réponse pour mon séjour à montréal,
  3.22 en attendant, ma résidence permanente,
  3.24 je pensais que je devrais peut-être partir
  3.26 et qu’est-ce que c’est l’identité d’une personne si ce n’est par la nourriture.
  3.30 donc, j’ai commencé par manger des nouilles tous les jours.
  3.34 je prenais un plat que je faisais.
  3.36 des nouilles instantanées spécifiquement coréennes.
  3.40 et à la fin de pouvoir faire un travail artistique.
  3.42 une sorte de tenture avec tous les paquets de nouilles.

  3.50 j’ai décidé de venir ici à montréal,
  3.52 parce que c’était un terrain vraiment neutre par rapport à mon adoption
  3.56 pas la corée pour être un.e. enfant adopté.e. et en belgique un.e. étrangèr.e.
  4.02 aussi si je voulais être vraiment étrangère, autant l’être dans un pays où je dois rien.
  4.06 c’est le lot de beaucoup d’immigrants, de venir à montréal en repartant à zero
  4.12 c’est vraiment un choix que je ne regrette pas du tout.
