En ce moment de COVID19, où le sentiment anti-asiatique est bien présent, je profite de ce joli mois de mai, qui est aussi le 20è anniversaire de la déclaration du mois du patrimoine asiatique pour créer un geste artistique de ‘sympathie’ (condoléance en français d’Europe), comme un acte citoyen.
In this time of COVID19, where the anti-Asian sentiment is very present, I take advantage of this 20th anniversary of the designation of May as the Asian Heritage Month, to create an artistic gesture of ‘sympathy’ (condolence in European French), without making it a ‘political act’ but rather a citizen act.
(English below) Les ‘ramyun’ (塭賊 en coréen/hangul), ‘ramen’ (ラーメン en japonais/katana) et ‘lā miàn’ (拉面 en Chinois simplifié) sont des nouilles instantanées considérées comme de la malbouffe ; une nourriture malsaine et bon marché qui se consomme rapidement et que les coréen.ne.s mangent comme collation.
J’ai commencé le premier projet des 100 ramyons en mai 2012, lorsque j’attendais la réponse de ma demande de résident.e permanant.e du Canada et que j’avais écrit une lettre à
Immigration et Citoyenneté Canada pour prolonger mon séjour à Montréal. J’étais conscient.e* que je pouvais être explusé.e et que je devrais sans doute retourner d’où je venais… en Europe (pas en Corée du Sud).
Les nouilles instantanées symbolisent (pour moi) ma culture d’origine, ainsi j’apportais avec moi la nourriture que je pouvais trouver dans toutes les grandes villes où j’ai décidé de vivre durant ma déportation (Paris-Berlin-Bruxelles).

‘Ramyeon’ (塭賊 in Korean/hangul), ‘ramen’ (ラーメン in Japanese/katana) and ‘lā miàn’ (拉面 in Chinese simplified) are instant noodles considered to be junk food (containing glutamate); unhealthy and inexpensive food that is consumed quickly and that Koreans generally eat as snack.
I started the project of 100 ramyeon project in may 2012, while I was waiting for a response regarding my approval for a permanent residency from Canada and a letter I had written to request an extension of stay to Immigration and Citizenship Canada. I was aware that I could be rejected and therefore deported and that I probably had to go back to where I came from… Europe (not South Korea).
Instant noodles symbolize (to me) my culture of origin and I brought with me the food that I could find in all major cities I decided to live during my deportation (Paris-Berlin-Brussels).
