In 1971, flights from South Korea to Europe used to go via Alaska and the North Pole to finally reach, in our case, Belgium. Today we can fly over the former Soviet Union without being shot down. So many things have happened in 25 years one never reckoned possible.

We first generation Korean-born adoptees have grown into adults. Nowadays we cannot afford to think within the limits of national frontiers. Today’s industry and technology enable if not forces us to think and act on a global scale. In the field of art, we too have to make those same efforts.

“West to East” is an exhibition that groups three individual artists who have one thing in common, cultural transmutation. In all other respects the artists are as different from one another as flowers in a field. We transcend all borders across the world regarding our individual education and upbringing. We also find ourselves in an unique position where we can be both Westerners and Asians at the same time.

This manifests itself in our different forms of artistic expression 「ad we would like to challenge the Korean public to understand us in this way ·) much as we try to understand our “birth” country.

We are simple artists with close relations to each other.  Strange as it may sound, our “Koreanness” binds us together in astounding ways.

‘1971 년 서울발 비행기로 유럽에 가려면 반드시 알라스카와 북극을 거쳐야만 했습니다． 하지만 이제는 어느 곳도 경유하지 않고 독립국가연합（구소련）을 직접 횡단하여 좀더 짧은 시간어― 유럽에 도착할 수 있게 되었습니다．

지난 25여년 간 많은 일들이 있었습니다． 그 가운데 확실한 한 가지가 있다면， 그것은 저희들， 유럽내의 한국입양아 첫 세대가 이제는 어엿한 성인이 되었다는 사실입니다．

이저― 우리는 국한된 한 나라 국경선 안에서만 사고할 수는 없게 되었습니다． 현대 기술 산업 역시 지구 차원에서 다루어져야 하는 것입니다． 여―술 분야에서도 이처럼 크게 세상을 바라보고， 위와 같은 노력을 해야 합니다．

‘West to East’는 3인의 예술인이 모여 만든 그룹의 전시회입니다． 이 그룹에 공통점이 하나 있다면， 그것은 바로 문화차원에서의 변형이라는 것입니다． 그외 모든 면에서는 들에 핀 꽃들만큼이나 각각 다른 개성을 지니고 있다고 할 수 있습니다． 우리는 우리 예술이 국경선을 넘어서 세게를 힁해 나아가기를 원합니다． 그리고 우리는 서양인이면서 동양인일 수 있는 그런 중요한 위치에 놓여 있다고 우리 나름대로를 바라보고 있습니다．

우리가 갖고자 하는 전시회가 바로 우리들의 다양한 예술적 표현의 장이 되었으면 합니다。
